Used heavy-duty work truck loaded for a Grayton Beach State Park area contractor on a narrow Scenic 30A coastal road in Florida

If your business runs routes along Scenic 30A and in and out of the Grayton Beach State Park area, a used heavy-duty pickup is probably your single most important equipment decision. Pick the right one and it hauls everything your crew needs without complaint. Pick the wrong one and you're fighting a truck that's either too long for tight turns off Main Park Road or too weak for the loads your landscaping or maintenance work puts on it.

A used Ram 2500 sits at the center of that decision for most small contractors working the South Walton corridor. Other platforms deserve a look, though. Let's break it down.

What's the Plan at a Glance?

Stop / Task What You're Doing Best Season Parking Note
Grayton Beach State Park grounds Landscaping, cleanup, maintenance access Year-round (peak: spring-fall) Small service lots; long-wheelbase duallies are a tight fit
Uptown Grayton vacation rentals Lawn care, delivery, turnover service Spring through fall peak On-street and small private lots; mid-wheelbase trucks fit cleanly
Scenic 30A supply runs Equipment and material hauling Year-round Pull-offs are narrow; a standard or crew-cab SRW clears more options
Park Rd access lanes Light utility, small trailer support Morning before visitor traffic Tight turns reward shorter overall length

Grayton Beach State Park and the 30A Contractor Economy

Grayton Beach State Park sits on CR 30A in Walton County between Panama City Beach and Destin, and the road leading to it is one of the narrowest, most heavily used two-lane corridors on the Panhandle. That shapes your truck choice more than you'd think. Businesses servicing the park grounds, the vacation rental properties in Uptown Grayton, and the dense residential corridor through Santa Rosa Beach deal with tight driveways, gravel service lanes, and limited turnaround space.

The landscaping and property maintenance economy along 30A is real and runs year-round. Browse our pre-owned inventory to see what's on the lot. The vacation rental stock in this corner of Walton County turns over constantly, the park draws visitors well into fall, and your truck needs to handle loads repeatedly, survive salt air, and fit into spaces that weren't designed for a dually with extended rear overhang.

Insider note: On our lot, the single rear wheel (SRW) crew cab is the configuration that fits these coastal routes. The dually's added width sounds impressive on paper, but on a narrow Grayton Beach side street or a park service lane, that extra eight inches makes three-point turns a real event. Unless you're regularly pulling more than 20,000 pounds, SRW is the smarter coastal pick.

The Two Used HD Trucks That Actually Fit This Work

The two platforms dominating legitimate HD contractor use in this region are the Ram 2500/3500 and the Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty. Let's take each one straight.

Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins diesel. This is the workhorse most experienced contractors land on. The 2021 and 2022 model years are where we'd point you first. The standard-output Cummins 6.7L diesel produces 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, with a manufacturer-verified maximum towing rating (properly equipped) of up to approximately 19,980 pounds on the 2022 Ram 2500. Payload on diesel configurations runs around 3,160 pounds. That's enough for a loaded trailer of mulch, sod, or landscaping equipment without breaking a sweat.

The tradeoff worth weighing is payload. Diesel Ram 2500 models carry lower max payload than their HEMI gas counterparts (the HEMI hits approximately 4,010 pounds on a 2021) because the Cummins drivetrain adds weight. If you're mostly towing a trailer, the Cummins wins. If your work is bed-heavy, check the payload sticker before you buy.

The Ram 3500 steps things up considerably. On 3500 models, the 6.7L Cummins High Output version produces 420 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque, with maximum towing ratings up to roughly 37,090 pounds on properly equipped dually configurations. The 3500 HEMI gas version maxes out around 7,580 pounds of payload. That reaches genuine commercial territory. Be realistic, though. If your biggest haul is a 16-foot trailer with riding mowers and hand tools, the 3500 is more truck than you'll use.

Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty. Equally capable and widely available used. The F-350 Super Duty (properly equipped) is rated for up to 7,850 pounds of payload and up to 21,200 pounds of towing. For used F-250 buyers specifically, the 2021 and 2022 model years show the lowest NHTSA complaint volume compared to surrounding years. The 2019 F-250 is a year to watch. NHTSA data records 713 complaints for that model year, with documented recalls including a rear axle shaft failure on 4x4 models with electronically locking rear differentials (NHTSA recall 19V688000). The 2020-2021 models also carried a documented steering column recall. Verify via VIN lookup that any unit you're considering has all open recalls closed before you buy.

Matching the Truck to Your 30A Route

Factor Ram 2500 Cummins SRW Ram 3500 Dually Ford F-250 SRW
Max towing (properly equipped) ~19,980 lbs ~37,090 lbs ~20,000 lbs
Max payload (gas config) ~4,010 lbs ~7,580 lbs ~7,850 lbs
Narrow 30A driveways Good fit Tight; plan your routes Good fit
Sweet spot used years 2021-2022 2021-2022 2021-2022
Years to watch Pre-2020 (air suspension history worth inspecting) 2020-2021 (steering recall; verify closed) 2019 (high NHTSA complaint volume, axle recall)
Diesel longevity upside Very high (Cummins reputation) Very high (same engine family) High (6.7L Power Stroke)
Next step: Pull the VIN on any used HD truck you're considering and run it through NHTSA's official recall lookup before you sign anything. Closed recalls are fine. An open one needs to be remedied first.

The Truck That Actually Earns Its Keep on the Panhandle

A used Ford F-250 or Ram 2500 in the 2021-2022 range is, in our experience, the right starting point for most South Walton contractors and park-area service businesses. A caveat worth stating up front is fuel. These trucks drink it. A Cummins diesel is significantly more efficient on loaded highway runs than a gasoline V8 pulling the same weight, but neither one's a fuel-economy story. What they are is reliable, parts-available, and capable of handling what the 30A economy actually demands.

Along the Panhandle coast, salt air is a real factor. The coastal environment accelerates corrosion on brake lines, undercarriage components, and electrical connections. When you're buying used, pay a shop to put the truck on a lift and inspect underneath. A truck that spent its first years inland and arrived on the coast recently is a meaningfully different proposition than one that sat near the Gulf for five years.
